
Courses Required to get a Smog License
*BAR requires 100% attendance at the six classes required to obtain an Advanced Emission Specialist Smog License. ( ASE certifications in A6, A8, and L1 may replace the 3 ASE alternative courses.) Students entering the course are expected to have a firm background in automotive engine theory and operation. In order to be eligible to take the State Licensing Exam at completion of the course/program, the student must also have one year of trade experience in engine performance/emissions, or nine semester units (13 quarter units) in Automotive Technology, or 180 hours at an accredited automotive school.
2011 Update 16 Hours $225 (Includes all materials, no re-test fees)
This course is for technicians who need to renew their smog license that expires after December 31, 2010 and for technicians who will make their initial application for a smog license in January 2011 or later. This course is designed to expand on the 2010 update course. Technicians will be required to participate in hands on lab based emission failure diagnosis and repair procedures. Students will utilize the latest in laptop based scanner equipment such as EASE Diagnostics, Autoenginuity, Modus, Genisys, Bosch VCI, Bosch KTS, Bosch Master Tech, Tech-2 as well as performing Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO) and Wave Form Analysis. Basic Clean Air Car Course 68 Hours $875 (Includes all materials, no re-test fees)
This course covers the basic understanding of vehicle emissions systems including their computers and how to identify and diagnose them effectively. This course will also cover advanced diagnostic and repair procedures on OBD II vehicles using the latest electronic interface diagnostic equipment, as well as rules and regulations in the Revision using the most current smog check manual. This course meets the requirements for the Basic Clean Air Car Course, 2003 Update, 2005 Update, 2007 Update, and OBD II Course. NO RE-TEST FEES
Enhanced Clean Air Car Course 28 Hours $380 (Includes all materials, no re-test fees)
This course covers the operating procedures of the BAR-97 dynamometer smog testing equipment and procedures as well as advanced diagnostic and repair procedures to repair vehicles that fail the loaded mode emissions test. This course replaces the previous Advanced Clean Air Car Course and BAR-97 Dyno Transition courses. Required for enhanced license only. NO RE-TEST FEES
A6 Alternative 20 Hours $345
This is a BAR approved alternative to the ASE A6 Electrical Systems and is a certification required for obtaining and maintaining smog technician licenses. This course is not instructed like other typical A-6 courses. Because AAT views this class as the “Back bone” to success in the industry, this class was designed to be very hands on. Students will build series, parallel, and series parallel circuits using state of the training aides designed after Toyotas electrical training boxes. The first time pass rate for this class or even the ASE electrical exam is well above the average. Includes manual (Re-test fees $60.00).
A8 Alternative 24 Hours $350
This is a BAR approved alternative to the ASE A8 Engine Performance certification required for obtaining and maintaining smog technician licenses. This course covers base engine operation including hands on lab assignments covering engine vacuum diagnosis, compression testing, cylinder leak down, ignition diagnosis and emissions diagnosis. Includes manual (Re-test fees $60.00)
L1 Alternative 28 Hours $380
This is a BAR approved alternative to the ASE L1 Advanced Engine Performance certification required for obtaining and maintaining smog technician licenses. This course covers the more in depth engine operating systems including, PEM, multi-plexing, controller area network (CAN) and emissions diagnosis. Includes manual (Re-test fees $60.00)

Diesel Technologies 16 hours $325 (Includes all materials)
This course is 60% Hands On and 40% Lecture.
This course covers how to Smog Diesel Platforms, along with Diesel Component Identification and Testing Procedures as required by the State of California. In addition; this course provides engine theory, operation, diagnosis and services common to various diesel engines such as Ford, Chrysler and GM platforms. Includes engine and performance testing, theory, diagnosis, and servicing of diesel fuel and emission systems. Includes an opportunity to analyze fuel and emission components and systems with emphasis on practical application of computer controlled fuel and emission systems. This course, assists in preparation for the ASE Diesel Certification.
Hybrid Technologies 16 Hours $275 (Includes all materials)
This course is a Tear Down class, 70% Hands On Training and 30% Lecture, covering the following areas:
- Introduction to Hybrid Vehicles, Hybrid Batteries and Servicing.
- How to Safely Perform Oil, Transmission and Cooling Services.
- How to put the vehicle in Inspection Mode.
- High Voltage ECU and SMR Relay Analysis.

Small Engine Repair 12 Hours $225 (Includes all materials)
This course covers basic operational theory, servicing, adjusting, and maintaining 2-cycle and 4 cycle small gas engines as they pertain to commercial, recreational and landscaping industries. The use of ATV, Chainsaws, Weed-eaters, Lawnmower engines (Honda / Briggs and Stratton).
State Exam Prep 10 Hours $200 (Includes Manual)
This course in not required for a technician to apply for a smog license or renew a license. This course is designed as a review of the 6 required courses to assist the student with preparing to take the state exam.
Air Condition / Climate Control 8 Hours $200 (Includes manuals, test and Certification)
This lecture lab course is instructed using the MACS and/or IMACA EPA approved certification curriculums which meets Section 609 Standards of the Clean Air Act. Students perform a wide verity of hands on assignments as well as system diagnostics. Technicians must be certified today in order to diagnose and repair A/C systems and purchase R-12 refrigerant.
Level I Citation Course 8 Hours $225 (Includes all materials)
This is a remedial training course for licensed smog technicians who have been given a Level I citation by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Course include lecture, lab and homework assignments. Scheduled on demand
Level II Citation Course 16 Hours $350 (Includes all materials)
This is a remedial training course for licensed smog technicians who have been given a Level II citation by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Classroom, homework and lab assignments must be completed in order to satisfy the requirements. Scheduled on demand.
Level III Citation Course 68 hours $875 (Includes all materials)
Level III citation issued by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. This includes the Basic Clean Air Car remedial training course for licensed smog technicians. All lectures, lab, homework assignments and attendance must be met in order to satisfy the Bureau’s requirements. Scheduled on demand.
